To help with delivery times: We have several saddles that are on the floor ready to go!  We can make subtle changes to these saddles, such as, changing out leathers/fenders, make a saddle english or western rigged, hardware modifications as well as skirt and panel changes, but that is all.  If we do not have a saddle that suites your needs then one will be built just for you.  Delivery for your custom saddle can take up to four months.

Current inventory: Call or email we will send you a current list of available saddles and then take detailed photos' of the saddle you are interested in.   Do be advised:  Saddles that are ready made, may or may not, show signs that there were on a horse.  This will be evident by having marks on the billets /latigo/ leathers/stirrups.  Just as you would not purchase a new car from a dealers lot inventory with 0 miles, the same is said for inventory saddles.

Discounts:  Rarely, but on occasion, we may have a saddle that will be discounted due to some odd reason (such as leather color) and as such, will pass this savings on to you.

I want to know why the saddles cost so much!?  They don't.  In fact we are NOT getting rich.  At the bottom of this page is the break down of our raw expenses.  Our most costly part is labor and that is because the saddles made in the USA.  Which we will NOT change!

A customers comment:  "If you are going to spend this much money...you BETTER get a saddle that fits multiple horses!  My Evolutionary saddles does!  THANK YOU!"

Extraordinary Performance
EVOLUTIONARY SADDLES TM

A personal message from Cathy Sheets Tauer: I personally have been riding and selling the various panel saddles since 1992. I have seen systems come and go and some reborn again.  I have worked with various manufacturers.  I have dealt with the aftermath from companies gone by and those issues manufacturers fail to address because they DON'T ride   AND I MEAN RIDE, - shoot and some don't even own horses or fit enough horses to gain enough experience to become an expert.  Folks, there are only so many hours in a day. What do you do with that time?  You can be a professional spokes person - endorse products, show, ride or train horses, you can massage and provide medical care for horses or you can build saddles.  But you CAN'T do it all.  Time does NOT allow for it.   I choose to RIDE and work with customers and their horses While Don and his helpers are steadily busy building each day.  In the off season (November through February) I do not ride but I write, sew, etc.  You get the idea.  So with my huge amount of field experience I am proud to introduce this wonderful system.

To illustrate the incredible flex and comfort fit of these panels, I saddled my broad backed, slightly mutton withered horse with both an English and Western saddle and took pictures as you can see below. I did not use any pads to "hide" the true fit of the saddle. You can see how the panels form around her shoulder. I then slid my hand under the panel and lifted up with my knuckles. Look how easy it is to move and bend these panels, how incredibly soft they are. I do not have a big strong hand, as you can see by the photo. The horse’s shoulders are free to move completely, without any interference from the saddle. Can you do this with your current saddle? Try these amazing saddles, compare them to others, put the saddle on your equines “bare” back using NO PADS to hide a bad fit and cinch the saddle down. Put your hands all over underneath the saddle. Even have someone sit in the saddle. What you feel is what your horse feels.

To  see the different back shapes that this incredible panel saddle fits  Click here  What do the different back shapes look like? Click here

NOTE:  This is my hand on the front edge of the panel without a rider in the saddle

Anyone can perform this test on their current saddle and compare.
Remember, here at Hill View Farms, we thoroughly test all of our products.  **Every year we put 1000 miles of real horseback riding miles on our horses. ** We test and then use only the best products, We RIDE.
The photos below are this amazing panel in action shown on my dining room table. Naturally, this saddle was NOT designed to fit a dining room table, but these pictures show how the panels can mash flat for a flat back or mutton-withered horse and then curve up to fit a real 'A' frame horse. Now THAT is a saddle that can really fit a wide variety of back shapes with no additional adjusting by you, the customer. This is why we LOVE our saddles and so do our horses!

Mutton withers?  A”- frame withers?  A flat rear back or an angled rear back? A soft shoulder?  A deformed shoulder?  Or how about a knobby one? A sway back?  A flat top line?  How about an angled shoulder with a flat rear back - the twist?  System X fits them all.

How about that tree?  Narrow thin, strong bars with faired ends allow free movement of the System X panels to give the rider close contact.
This saddle, when viewed from the rear REALLY looks high off the horse’s back!  But, it is just 1.25 inches from the back of the horse to the bar of the saddle. Compare this to ANY other saddle with a pad that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and there will be very little difference.  How can this be?
Click here for Cathy's cheesy answer.

YES... This is a system that can fit a wide variety of back shapes and allow you to go freely from horse to horse  with no additional adjusting by you, the customer. Click here for more information on how  One Saddle can fit a variety of different shaped backs .

A customer brought these templates in to make sure our saddles would fit.  THEY SURE DO!

THESE Saddles WORK.  No fancy gimmicks or slick options.  We sell you a saddle that is and practical and functional.  An easy purchase and if the saddle is not right for whatever reason, you GET YOUR MONEY BACK
Personally, I am tired of being ripped off by **** companies and so we tell it how it is - Period.

As part of our commitment to quality:  Before any saddle leaves the production house, each saddle will have gone through a two person signed inspection.  The saddle leather will have been conditioned, the panels oiled and lastly the entire saddle will be delivered with the Hill View Farmsâ  luster shine.  The saddle is ready to ride when it arrives.  All of the saddles will have System X panels and a saddle tree in which the weight of the saddle will be less by up to 20%, yet strong enough to carry a 10 year warrantee against breakage.

The Classic Caliente  Built on the same tree as the Liberty this style is by far the most popular trail riding western saddle! The Classic Caliente spells comfort. A contemporary design featuring tear drop fenders, straight cantle binding, a slick fork and a deep seat pocket gives the rider comforting lower back support for the all day ride. Another attribute of this saddle is the formed foam thigh rolls. These rolls are more forgiving the hard wooden swells of a traditional tree if your mule or horse makes some sudden unexpected moves. The nicely padded soft-seat uses both upholstery and neoprene foams, hand skived and shaped to an anatomically correct shape with no stitching lines that can rub you raw. This saddle is popular with all breeds and types of horses and mules too! The round skirt design gives it ability to fit the various back shapes – long and short, dippy and straight. This saddle has a narrow to moderate twist that allows the rider to ride all day long without getting fatigued in the knees and hips.  Another plus for this saddle is the easy free flowing movement of the fenders that virtually eliminate the problems that some folks have with their legs and feet falling asleep.  As for security, it is all there.  The ultra thin tree and advance panel design allows the rider a next-to and down-on the (horse secure seat. Oh… and don’t forget that horn… you can really use it.  Great for ponying young stock along, yet low enough where you will not easily get impaled. In closing, the only difference between the Caliente and the Liberty is that the Caliente has the blocking  Photo showing difference.

The Battery  This saddle is a modern replica of the original McClellan saddle used by the US Civil War horse-drawn artillery units.  There is a still active unit located in New Ulm, Mn.  This militia was established in 1863 for the city of New Ulm.  Don Tauer, Cathy's husband, has been a member of this militia since 1997. Don works, trains, and rides the draft bred horses for many of the Battery's major functions.   The original McClellan saddle was developed for men during the 1800's who averaged in height of 5.5 to 5.7 and weighed  116 to 123 lbs., and who rode horses that were extremely narrow with razor type withers, (very much like the thoroughbred track horses of today.)  We know exactly how this original equipment can hurt a horse and cause him to perform badly. This now modern McClellan Battery saddle has two important distinctions from the original: It’s comfortable for you and won’t cause pressure points on your horse. The substantial width dish in the seat makes it extremely comfortable for long hours of riding at any gait. The slightly narrowed rise helps keep you in the pocket of the seat for all day riding.  The stirrup straps are adjustable for more security during fast stops. The whole package makes riding glorious. The ability to tie gear front and rear is legendary. For more on the  NEW ULM BATTERY

The Jumper Cross Trainer  Built on the same tree as the Classic Cutback, this Jumping Cross Trainer saddle has a very comfortable seat compared to the typical jumping saddle.  Most jumping saddles have been pared down to their current size in a misguided attempt to reduce weight and give the rider close contact.  The Jumping CT has a gentle curve to the seat and the cut-back pommel frees the rider, for jumping, dressage, endurance, equitation and cross country field trials.  The panels spread out the relentless concussion of jumping protect the horses back, allowing him to perform and move freely. This saddle sports the three- position stirrup hangers so the leathers can be moved into a legs-under position for dressage without switching saddles. The flap has a forward design with exterior soft knee blocking that opens to allow exact blocking placement or removal. The rear blocking has the same features. (This adjustable blocking offers the rider real security).  This saddle makes for a wonderful all-purpose combined training saddle.  It is fantastic and sits and rides like a dream.

The Ultimate Pack Saddle  Tested over 90 miles of non-stop riding in the Montana wilderness, this re-engineered packsaddle by Evolutionary saddles will fit today’s horses and mules.  Attached to the Ralide® pack tree are the amazing System X panels which spread the dead-weight load across the pack animal’s back, preventing pressure points, soreness, and galls.  This saddle will clear even the tallest of withers.  Also added is the freely adjustable slide n’ lock rigging, allowing easy repositioning of the rigging up and down; forward and back - balance the load and to position the girth to avoid galling.  The neoprene girth features stainless steel roller buckles, allowing for easy and fast tightening and has a pocket to tuck away the billet straps to protect the animal’s sides. Dee rings are strategically placed on the tree to allow for a perfect-fitting pack load.  Included are Saddle Sox™, which is a pad that stays attached to the packsaddle (but can easily removed and laundered). This pad does not bunch or slip, thus avoiding bruising of the animal’s spine or withers or causing galls.

Also a must have are the Garment bags under the    "Bag" section of this web site. Two of these bags make packing the little things with all the clips much easier, as well as the Tubtrugs that you can use as feed pails and to haul water page 30.

Rent it!  Instead of purchasing the entire package for occasional use you can rent it for just $30.00 per day.  A $1400.00 deposit is required which will be returned minus rental and shipping when the rented items are returned Contact us for further details.

What is a Mantie vs. Panniers?  You use a mantie tarp and rope to make a mantie load.  Hard to balance each side until you get it tied and then you can sometimes adjust by raising or lowering the mantie on the horse. Panniers are boxes that are formed to and loaded on to the pack tree.  You attach with the short leather straps that go under the dowel onto the tree.  If you have a decker tree, just buckle through the decker rings.  If you have a sawbuck or decker rings with knobs you buckle the strap and place the loop on the far side of the tree. Easy to balance load and unload. If your stock likes to jump things you must use a bottom strap to hold the pack down because the pannier could come off.

The Extra Padding of the Soft-seat or not?
The standard seat or Soft Seat - that is the question.

Center photo of lighter color saddle DOES NOT have the extra padding that is in the Soft Seat.

Why select the extra padding of the Soft Seat
There are some points to consider when deciding to select the Soft Seat option. First, you will lose some of the seat room in the saddle. If you are between sizes use this to help gauge your seat size. Secondly when you select the Soft Seat with the extra padding, you will lose a bit of the "pocket" to sit down in. Lastly, with the Soft Seat, the saddle will have a bit narrower twist. The twist is the part that is between your upper thighs. Therefore, if you like a narrower twist, have a bony butt or need a smaller seat size, adding the extra padding of the Soft Seat is key.

Maintenance

We ask is that you oil your saddle at least once a year. Using 3 in one oil with an extension tube pointed down into the rear slot of your saddles panel.  This oiling will keep panels gliding smoothly.  However if you happen to forget, and thanks to our easy slide mounting system your saddle will not be damaged but your panels my not slide as smoothly if they were oiled.  We also request that you clean and condition your leather once a year keeping it soft and supple.

END NOTES

Customer Concern:  I must say - I'm VERY intrigued by the saddles you sell. I really try to "do right" by my horse and I think saddle fit is the biggest thing we as people get wrong. I tried a friend's **(other saddle brand)** about a year ago and was really disappointed (so was she - it was for sale).
Cathy's Answer:   There are always three things that cause issues that result in the rider getting rid of their saddle or not purchasing one. All of these three things are due to the sale representative NOT educating them. The three areas of concern are

  1. The horses confirmation - or past issues.
  2. The Rider not knowing how to operate and correctly fit and use the saddle.
  3. The Saddle itself, that it may be the wrong style, size or something is technically wrong.

All of the above boils down to one problem, the sales person who sold the customer the product and the lack of educating the customer .

Looking to purchase a saddle? Ask yourself; Can you really afford multiple saddles for various horses? Do you have enough money to buy saddle after saddle? Do you want to meet your saddle dealer regularly to have your saddle fitted again and again? Are you concerned about wasting money and time through refitting your saddle yearly or even more often? Do you know how to and when it is time to re-flock or shim your saddle? Do you know how to pick-up-on and look for the subtleties in proper saddle fit? Or have a qualified ground person to assist you? Are you willing to waste your weekend with a saddle that doesn’t fit? Are you tired of having sore knees and hips? Are you tired of your horse’s bad behavior? So… you have a new Pick-up, new trailer, old saddle technology, which is likely to ruin your weekend? Driving a new pickup off the lot costs you more in depreciation than investing in one of our saddles, that you can ride for 5 years and sill get your original investment back, what does that tell you? If you use your grandfather’s saddle on your horse do you use his pick-up to pull your trailer?  Who else gives you a 30-day money back test-ride on their saddles? And isn't your true concern about how your horse feels? And, just because our saddles may be less expensive than some of the name brand - celebrity endorsed saddles, does not mean you will not have the supreme product!

A 4-wheel drive pick-up costs ~ $40,000

A Horse trailer with living quarters costs ~ $55,000

A good horse costs ~ $5,000.00

Total money invested for a nice weekend is $100,000.00

PLEASE if you do not already have this DVD, All About Saddling  - BUY ONE!  It is worth EVERY PENNY!!!
(You will receive one with a every new saddle purchase.)

Attention Saddle Shoppers:  It has come  to my attention that I now need to post this question everywhere where consumers like you can read it!  Question: "I have a saddle that does not fit and they (the company or tack dealer) will not return my call or take the saddle back. What can I do? Please, can you help me?" I get calls like this on average of once a week. Your only recourse is your Credit Card Company or bank. For those of you who are looking for a saddle, heed this advice. Never, never, purchase a saddle unless you are able to return it after a test ride for your money back. If a Saddle Company, maker or dealer will not give you a money back test ride on a saddle, TURN AND WALK AWAY! It makes no difference who makes the saddle or what brand, if you can not get a test ride with a money back agreement then you WILL BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF and both you and your horse will have paid dearly for your mistake.
